Nursery
Unique child
Every child is unique. They have varying levels of resilience and confidence, abilities and needs. It is our task to help and support each child to achieve their potential and foster aspiration, within an inclusive, safe and healthy environment.
Positive relationships are key, and we are keen to develop partnerships with families, promoting mutual understanding and respect, which in turn supports the learning of each child. Through positive role models children learn respect for others.
Personal Social and Emotional Development.
Children are encouraged to respect themselves and others. Social skills are developed through shared learning activities and, more informally, during play time and eating a hot lunch, sharing a table with one teacher and six other children.
Children enjoy a broad range of activities within the purpose built Nursery, garden or Forest School area. They learn to work as part of a group, to take turns and share fairly, whilst developing an understanding and appreciation of the world around them.
Communication, Language and Literacy.
Communication skills are developed through a range of activities including listening to stories, songs and rhymes, role play and teacher directed child lead purposeful play. Children are introduced to basic letter formation and how to hold a pencil effectively. By the end of their time in the Nursery each child is generally able to write their name, whilst those who are keen and ready have already embarked on the early stages of reading.
Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy.
Children are introduced to numbers, recognising numerals and counting reliably, through songs, movement and games.
Knowledge and Understanding of the World.
The Nursery children develop their knowledge and understanding that help them to make sense of the world through exploration, being encouraged to observe, use their senses and question.
Physical Development.
Children develop their skills of coordination, control, manipulation and movement during activities within the Nursery but also in a weekly gym session using the Prep school's superb facilities.
Creative Development.
Curiosity, exploration and play are all encouraged and nurtured through art, music, dance and imaginative role-play activities. The Nursery children enjoy a weekly Music lesson and have the option of joining a dance hobby.
